About the researcher

Sarah Golightley

I am a Social Work PhD student at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Researching therapeutic boarding schools has been a life-long dream of mine. I am a former 'troubled teen' who attended a USA-based therapeutic boarding school. My personal experience inspired me to want to know more about who gets sent to these schools, how former students experienced the schools, and what the long-term impacts have been. I am very thankful to the former students who have shared their experiences with me.

My research background includes having worked as a peer researcher on the largest ever review of mental health peer support groups in England. I am currently writing on intersectionality and peer research methods. In addition to my academic work, I am a Qualified Social Worker who has specialised in supporting LGBTQ+ people who have experienced domestic abuse, violence, and homelessness.
